Our Chief Commissioner, Clare, has been very busy on zoom recently, virtually presenting Girlguiding's Laurel Award and Guiding Star Award to two inspirational leaders.

The celebrations started on Sunday 15 November when Amber Wilbourn, an Assistant Leader with 1st Tipton Rainbow and Brownie units in Derbyshire, attended the county's Zoom "Celebration Afternoon Tea", having no idea why she was there!

After enjoying the delicious teas delivered to all the award recipients' doors, Clare 'presented' Amber with the "Guiding Star" which is given to members under 26 for displaying exceptional courage.

The National Awards Committee said "We are delighted to award Amber Wilbourn a Guiding Star. We are extremely impressed by the manner in which she has coped with such difficult times in her life. With her positive attitude she has set an example to all those around her."

Many congratulations Amber!

The second presentation was to former County Commissioner for Birmingham, Maggie Jones. Maggie had been invited by Clare to be interviewed for a video she told her she was making to promote the National Scout and Guide Orchestra, for which Maggie is the Lead Volunteer for Guiding.

Imagine Maggie's shock when she was let in from the waiting room to see, not just Clare, but almost 100 other faces, all of whom looked very familiar!

Surrounded virtually by her family and guiding and scouting friends, Maggie's daughter, Claire, was invited to present Maggie with her brooch and Freddie, Maggie's grandson, proudly presented her certificate.

The National Awards Committee said of Maggie "It is clear that Maggie Jones is an inspirational role model. Through her many management and leadership roles, she has had a direct impact on the girls and adults in her county and region. She is a dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic leader and we are delighted to confirm her Laurel Award."

After the presentation members of the National Scout and Guide orchestra played a live rendition of "Congratulations" and the county presented a cake whilst the assembled audience toasted Maggie's success!    Many congratulations Maggie!
