A young Girlguiding member from Leicester celebrated International Day of the Girl at a special girl-only gig on Saturday 10 October at London’s SSE Wembley Arena.
Sharon Lushiku, 19, who is a Leader with the Abbotsford Guides and a Girlguiding spokesperson, proved that girls’ voices can shout the loudest as she joined in a vocal Mexican wave at the show.
Sharon also proved her press credentials as she went backstage to interview pop superstar Ella Henderson, former JLS member Aston Merrygold, The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes and many more at the BIG GIG.
The event is held twice per year exclusively for Guides from all over the UK, including hundreds from Leicestershire. This year it falls the day before the UN-declared International Day of the Girl.
Sharon said: “It was absolutely amazing to be celebrating such an amazing day of the Girl with 20,000 girls at the BIG GIG! I think it's just the perfect way to do it. Seeing all young girls excited and singing along with their favourite acts was the best.
“I think the BIG GIG is an important event because it's just for girls and shows them just how much fun they can have – they can be themselves and be confident.
“The most inspiring thing I heard from an act was when Gabrielle Aplin said we should celebrate International day of the Girl every day - until there is a time when we don’t have to anymore!”
The BIG GIG is hosted by Girlguiding for members aged between 10 and 14, and has seen some of the biggest names in pop – including Ed Sheeran, Tinie Tempah and Rita Ora – perform at major venues around the UK over its 14-year history.
